New Media and Computer Animation students recognized in national alternative film fest

BS New Media and Computer Animation (BS NMCA) students were recognized for their films in the Ika-27 Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula At Video (The 27th CCP Independent Film & Video Festival) held on August 8 to 11, 2015.

The film festival, also called Gawad Alternatibo, is an annual event organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). It is the longest-running independent film competition of its kind in the ASEAN/Asian region.  The festival was held at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde at the CCP on Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.

Gawad Alternatibo recognizes the works of gifted and budding Filipino independent filmmakers and encourages them to develop their craft by providing a venue to exhibit their best efforts in filmmaking.

BS NMCA student Izaac Nicoll L.V. Chiong received Honorable Mention in the Animation Category for his short film Contra Vini (To Stand Against).

Student films that made it as finalists in the Animation Category were Alcanza (Reach) by Rafael Daniel G. Evangelista V, Cosa Tiene Apuera? (What’s Out There?) by Freda Nissa P. Dumapay, Cuando Contigo (When With You)by Jorzheema M. Hamid, El Gallo (The Rooster) ∫ Emmanuel Raymond M. Sevilla, El Niño Pescador (The Young Fisherman) by Jerome C. Peniones, Juego De Rol (Role Playing Game) by Abraham Ysmael S.T. Alvarez,Movimiento (Movement) by Aljhun Rey Canillo, Pinta Conmigo (Paint Me) by Rikka Angeli A. Mandanas and Terminado y Hecho (Over and Done) by Anthony Neil A. Drapiza.

Films of BS NMCA students who graduated March 2015 made it as well as finalists: Apple Horn by Zanshevar R. Shammah, Atubanga by Danie Alted C. Nebrija (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), Campus Monster by Alexis Cheong (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), El Bloques by Danica Jane C. Follero (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), El Monstruo by Alyana P. Garcia (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), If Only by Martin Luigi G. Bugante(Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), Josh And Tamarr by Feriza Kingking (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), Space Between by Jessa Kristine C. Del Mar (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015), and Tienda de Juguete by Dale Aldrin Maniego (Graduate of NMCA last March 2015).

Three ADZU student films were named finalists in the Short Feature Category. These were El Muerte del Un Mariposa (The Death of a Butterfly) directed by Jorzheema M. Hamid,   Tagu-Taguan (Hide and Seek) directed by Aljhun Rey Canillo, and Escondido Amor directed by Icy Mae B. Colipano.

The production teams for all three films were made up of BS NMCA students or alumni: Anthony Neil A. Drapiza , Emmanuel C. Buenvenida , Khaled T. Majid , and Jehyo B. Baraquia (for El Muerte del Un Mariposa ); Al John Rey Pundal, James Gabriel Jalon, Rezamar Tajil, Rey Andrei Molina, Ryan Covarrubias, Rikka Mandanas, Jerome Peniones, Jeffrey Capinpin, and Emmanuel Raymond Sevilla (for Tagu-Taguan ); and Brylle Lee, Aljhun Canillo, Jerome Peniones, Shyrell Presno, Earl Los Banos, and John Joshua Pena (for Escondido Amor).

Since 1987, Gawad Alternatibo annually cites the best efforts of Pinoy filmmakers in four categories –Animation, Experimental, Documentary and Short Feature.  Winners each receive a cash prize, as well as certificate.  Aside from the main awards, special citations may be given out to the best work from the regions, as well as works on/for/by children.  Many of today’s outstanding filmmakers and media practitioners are alumni of Gawad Alternatibo.
