Research, Innovation Drive CSITE 2nd Research Colloquium

Advancing its mission of forming innovators who translate knowledge into meaningful, real-world impact, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University College of Science, Information Technology, and Engineering (CSITE) convened its 2nd CSITE Research Colloquium on April 16–17, 2026. Supported by the Department of Science and Technology Region IX (DOST IX) and Smartnote Computer System, the two-day event brought together undergraduate and graduate students in a dynamic academic platform featuring oral and poster presentations alongside parallel sessions that fostered exchange, collaboration, and critical inquiry.

Anchored on the theme: “Innovating Science and Technology: Connecting Ideas, Empowering Communities,” the colloquium highlighted student-driven research and capstone projects that addressed real-world challenges, reinforcing CSITE’s commitment to innovation, knowledge-sharing, and community-centered impact.

Keynote speaker, DLSU-Manila College of Computer Studies Associate Professor, Research Fellow, and Assistant Dean, Dr. Ryan A. Ebardo, challenged participants to adapt to a rapidly evolving academic landscape, urging them to “embrace AI, or embrace teaching yesterday to tomorrow’s world,” framing innovation as both a necessity and responsibility.

DOST IX Assistant Regional Director Mr. Ricardo J. Apolinario III expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing that “ideas only matter when they make a difference,” and called on researchers to translate their work into tangible societal impact.

Vice President for Higher Education, Fr. Rene C. Tacastacas, SJ, underscored the deeper purpose of research, stressing that “research is not just for compliance; it is the hallmark of a true university—a Jesuit university.” This call to purpose set the tone for a colloquium grounded in impact and service. Engineering Department Chair, Engr. Janet G. Tan further grounded the experience, noting that “research is not just about following a manual or building a prototype; it is about having the right attitude,” grounding innovation in discipline, curiosity, and purpose.

Beyond student presentations, CSITE strengthened its research culture through a faculty workshop on publication strategies and methodologies held on April 17, 2026, facilitated by Dr. Ryan A. Ebardo. CSITE Dean Dr. Jocelyn D. Partosa described the workshop as “a direct response to our strategic goal of strengthening and sustaining our research and publication portfolio,” adding that it is pursued with generosity and openness, supported by institutional mechanisms that enable faculty growth.

The CSITE Research Colloquium continues to stand as a cornerstone academic initiative that advances the University’s mission of forming individuals committed to service and nation-building, while bridging ideas, empowering communities, and shaping a new generation of Atenean innovators.
