Full house in the recently concluded Ambeth Ocampo lecture

Multi-awarded historian, academic, and author Ambeth R. Ocampo delivered a lecture on Effective Teaching of Philippine History and Rizal Course on February 13, 2015 at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

The lecture drew a large crowd that filled the hall to beyond seating capacity, leaving many to listen to the lecture standing up. Organizers did not anticipate that more than 200 will register.

Social Sciences Department Chair Ma. Cristina Canones said that there were teachers even from the far barangays of the city and that there were delegations from Dipolog City, Pagadian City, Ipil, and Lamitan.

The participants were mostly basic and higher education teachers. There were also pre-service teachers whose prospects are in the related disciplines.

The lecture was organized by the Social Sciences Department of Ateneo de Zamboanga University in collaboration with the Bank of the Philippine Islands Foundation Inc. and Anvil Publishing Inc..

Participants expressed appreciation for the valuable insights on how history instruction and learning can be enriched in schools.

Professor Ocampo challenged teachers to make clever use of technology, rich visual imageries, and utilization of authentic materials to make students engage in learning history.
