The Ateneo de Zamboanga University opened its centennial celebration with a tree tagging activity on July 27, 2012 at Fr. Eusebio Salvador SJ campus. Three century-old Acacia trees at the backfield were tagged to mark its historic contribution to the City of Zamboanga and in pursuant to Executive Order 460 issued by Hon. Celso L Lobregat declaring 16 century-old trees in the city as identified by the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR).
During the event, Fr. Antonio F. Moreno SJ, ADZU President, stressed that the activity “is a statement of AdZU’s commitment to protect the environment.” The event also proved to be consistent with the advocacy of the university since it is applying for a Green Campus accreditation.
The activity was made possible through the efforts of Program on Environment of the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office and the Physical Plant Office (PPO).
In the next century to come, it is hoped that the environmental efforts done by the ADZU community would impact the conscience of the citizens of the city. The tree tagging activity is a reminder that trees are perpetually there to serve as sources of fresh and clean air and, as such, must be preserved and protected.
