Ateneo Research Center conducts ARC Regional Research Forum 2015

The Ateneo Research Center successfully conducted the 2-day ARC Regional Research Forum 2015. This year’s Research Forum featured the research completed by Mr. Anthony T. Buaya of the AdZU College of Science and Technology (CSIT), Ms. Cindy Anne J. Quaile of the AdZU School of Liberal Arts (SLA) and the Phil-LiDAR teams of AdZU. The forum, which had three (3) Plenary Sessions and four (4) Parallel Sessions, was held at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall on July 27 and 28, 2015 in the Fr Eusebio Salvador, SJ Campus of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.


Aside from faculty members from the various schools and colleges from AdZU, participants in the event also included faculty members from Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC), Pilar College, Basilan State College (BSC), Saint Columban College of Pagadian City (SCC), Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU) and Mindanao State University Buug (MSU-Buug).


MrBuaya presented his paper entitled The Myxomycetes in Pasonanca Natural Park, Zamboanga City: Occurrence, Diversity, and Distribution during the 1st plenary session. The research introduced MrBuaya’s newly discovered specie of a type of my xomycetes bacteria believed to be found only in Zamboanga City.

The Phil-LiDAR teams of AdZU represented by Mr Rengie P. Bagares, Ms Charzel Dice M. Magpayo, and Ms Elona Jane Mariz O. Lerios presented various GIS-based maps that covered the Tumaga River Basin, the island of Tictabon, and the agricultural land cover of Barangay Ayala. The maps were generated through the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology.  Bagares’ research was presented in the 1st plenary session whereas the presentations of Magpayo and Lerios highlighted the 2nd plenary session.


Ms Quaile’sAssessing Zamboanga City’s Economy in View of the September 2013 Incursion, presented during the 3rdplenary session, examined the implications of the September 2013 armed conflict between the Philippine government and a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front on the economy of Zamboanga City. The presentation highlighted data that indicated the effect of the 2013 Incursion on the city’s financial, transport, and service sectors as well as on the sector on agriculture and the local sardine industry.


Other plenary session presentations included Robert V. Panaguiton’s(AdZU) Spirituality of Dialogue: Exploring Communication in the Pilgrimage to the Fort Pilar Shrine and Edna M. Barcelona’s (SCC Pagadian) ShelabukRenGbenwa: Tagapasiwalat Sa Kasaysayan at Kulturang Subanensa Brgy Lison Valley, LungsodngPagadian.

Also present in the forum were AdZU President Fr Karel S. San Juan, SJ and CHED Regional Director Juanito R. Demetrio, PhD.


The event also featured 12 researches presented in the parallel sessions. Faculty members from AdZU, SCC-Pagadian, and ZCSPC were the presenters. In addition a short film entitled ‘TimoraTalliApuerasiRamil, an original creative work of Mr. Roberto Oquias, Jr, was presented at the end of the first day. This film won Best Animated Film during the 9th Mindanao Film Festival 2013 and was awarded Best Animation for Children during the Animahenasyon 2013: 7th Philippine Animation Festival.
