Secretary Carlos Dominguez III
In line with the celebration
of the 81st Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga, members of the Ateneo de Zamboanga
University welcomed Department of Finance
Secretary Carlos Dominguez III in a simple reception at the Carlos Dominguez
Conference Hall.
University
President Fr Karel San Juan SJ, gave a brief introduction on Dominguez relating
how his family has helped AdZU through professorial chairs and scholarships.
The Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall (CDCH) was named after his father, a
graduate of AdZU High School Class of 1938.
In his
talk, Sec Dominguez shares his family’s strong relationship with the Jesuits
and related to the audience how Jesuit Education is infused in their lives. He spoke
about visiting AdZU as a homecoming for him. Addressing Fr Karel, he expressed,
in behalf of his family, that funds will be made available for the improvement
of the CDCH should there be a need for it.
The
Finance Secretary also talked the audience through the daily functions of his
department. He shared how his office works to keep government projects running
through proper fund allocation while making sure that the Philippine economy is
continually growing. He emphasized the importance of transparency
in the country’s Financial System further citing some benefits of the recently
implemented Tax Reforms. In addition, Dominguez made time to answer some questions
raised by members of the community.
Before
ending his talk, he presented Fr President Karel San Juan and former AdZU
President Fr William H Kreutz with a gift—a published biography of his mother
entitled Born in Jolo, Virginia Garcia
Dominguez, the unfinished saga of Mindanao. In return, Fr Karel presented
to him gifts from the Ateneo—a collection of film, literary pieces produced and
written by Jesuits and a portrait of his father, the late Carlos Dominguez.
Fr
Karel again expressed his gratitude (through a post) to the Secretary for
sharing his appreciation of (his) Ateneo/Jesuit values and education, and his
passion to make the country better, Pro Deo et Patria.
Born
in Zamboanga City, Sec Dominguez was this year’s guest of honor and keynote
speaker of the Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga celebration.
The Dia
de la Ciudad de Zamboanga is a month-long celebration with activities
commemorating the city’s charter anniversary. The day is a special non-working
holiday in Zamboanga City.
