ADZU student declared national statistics champion

For the third time since 2009, an Ateneo de Zamboanga University student is declared Philippine Statistics Quiz Champion.

BS Accountancy student Andre Gilmore Arpa bested 16 other contestants from the other regions of the country and emerged champion in the 23rd Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) held December 9, 2014 at the Toyota Asian Center Auditorium in Diliman, Quezon City.

Abdel Aziz Alfad bagged the title in 2009 and Efren Medallo won in 2011.

The PSQ is an annual competition organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association. The quiz seeks to appraise the competency of college freshmen in statistics as acquired from high school.

Moreover, organizers say that PSQ’s objective is “to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics among the Filipino youth. Likewise, it seeks to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development-planning activities and win overall support for all government statistical activities”.

Arpa was coached by Mathematics Department professor Daisy Quisel. As champion, Arpa took home a trophy and a cash prize of Ph 30,000.00. Winning coaches took home an amount equivalent to half their student’s cash prize. ADZU received a Certificate of Recognition from the organizers.

The Quiz was first held in 1992 and has become an annual competition since then. The Commission on Higher Education has been endorsing it since 1994.
