November 8, 2014 – Teatro Ateneo de Zamboanga, the resident theatre organization of Ateneo Center for Culture and the Arts, staged a synchronized public performance art dubbed as “KALIG-ON: Mud Walk for Justice”. Members of Teatro Ateneo together with their Artistic Director Kiko Miranda, covered themselves in mud and ash and walked around ADZU campus and along La Purisima St. carrying plastic bags and debris with signs that read “REMEMBER YOLANDA NOVEMBER 8”. The performance was staged in an effort to make the community remember the tragedy that happened exactly a year ago when Typhoon Haiyan ravaged the Visayas regions.
The performance was part of a nationwide synchronized performance of various progressive performance artists. Artists from UP Diliman, Lipa City, Cagayan de Oro City, UP Visayas, and other key areas around the country participated in the performance.
Some of the participating artists and groups were Capitol University Dance Troupe, CDO Arts Guild, Teatro Ateneo de Zamboanga, Teatro Lasalyano, Babaylan, Karibok, De La Salle Lipa, Batangas, Ugatlahi Artists Collective, KARATULA-Ilo-Ilo, Alay Sining, People Surge, Nick Aca, Rogger Basco, Jo-an Sarmogenes, Angelo Hulip, Badoy Conco, Gilbey De Castro, Jerome Gregorio, Rael Tan, Crisanto De Leon, Boyet De Mesa, Andrew Florentino, Lean Flores, Lito Guarin, Ryan Murillo, Joanna Lerio.
“Us in Zamboanga are one with the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda as we try to bring back normalcy after being ravaged by disasters. The cries of the survivors of Yolanda are very much similar with the cries of the survivors of the Zamboanga Siege. In spirit and through performance, we connect with our sisters and brothers in the Visayas and send them our prayers.” shared Kiko Miranda.
