Quezon City, Philippines – In a significant event that fostered regional cooperation, the Ateneo Learning and Teaching Excellence Center (ALTEC) actively participated in the ASEAN Youth Summit 2023 on June 27 – 28, 2023. ALTEC was invited to showcase its work on Alternative School for Peacebuilding and the Arts in its SUGPAT Program.
The ASEAN Youth Summit serves as a platform that amplifies the successes of grassroots initiatives within the Southeast Asian region. These initiatives, borne out of the passion and dedication of young individuals, showcase the incredible capacity for change at a local level. However, the summit does not merely highlight these achievements; it envisions their broader integration into overarching strategies for regional transformation. Over the course of two days, the summit delved into eight key thematic areas, ranging from entrepreneurship and digital learning to environmental resilience and youth leadership.
The ASEAN Youth Summit brought together over 200 delegates from ASEAN member countries, providing a platform for meaningful exchanges and conversations on education innovations driven by the region’s young talents. During the summit, thought-provoking ideas and insights were shared, highlighting the creativity and intellectual capacity of the youth.

Rogin Eribal, ALTEC Director, and Joshua Labra, a fellow of the Alternative School, represented the center, seizing the opportunity to contribute to discussions on youth empowerment through arts-based education. Their involvement in an international event of this nature demonstrates the center’s dedication to fostering positive change in Western Mindanao and beyond. The unique approach of Learning Through Arts in the Alternative School that emphasized the importance of innovative teaching and methods resonated with summit attendees, coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Laos, and the Philippines.
The participation of ALTEC serves as a reminder of the progressive initiatives taking place within the educational constitutions.
