AdZU HS celebrates St. Ignatius Week with inter-class tilt and Tetuan Parish Visit

“Ateneo: 100 Years and Beyond” was the theme of this year’s observance of a week dedicated to the life and works of the founder of the Society of Jesus –St. Ignatius of Loyola.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga High School through its Campus Ministry and Religion Department highlighted the event through a day of inter-class competition that saw students battling it out in duet singing, interpretative dance, tableaux presentation and a unique twist to cosplay –Jesplay. These were held at the Multi-Purpose Covered Courts of the AdZU Salvador Campus, July 26, Friday.

Grade 7 students belted out songs from the Jesuit playbook to the delight of spectators with the paired singers from St. Borgia class emerging as best. For interpretative dance segment, the dancers from St. Evans bested six other contenders to emerge as the winner.

The theme was rendered in creative tableaux displays with all the seven senior classes participating. The class of St. Arrowsmith was adjudged champion in the said competition.

In a creative take on the fad cosplay, students in the 3rd Year level were asked to be mimics of their class saints. Cheers erupted as contestants paraded in garbs of 17th-18th century apparel complete with false mustaches, beards and even sideburns! The eventual winner was a convincing St. Peter Faber.

On Sunday, July 28, the same unit sponsored the Mass at St. Ignatius Church in Tetuan, this city. Several faculty members and administrators as well as some senior students were in attendance as Fr. Wilfredo Samson, SJ presided. In his homily, Fr. Samson acknowledge the significance of the holding the Mass there in preparation for the Feast of St. Ignatius that falls on the end of the month. He also encouraged the congregation to live out the Ignatian values. Tetuan is also celebrating its sesquicentennial this year as a parish, having been founded in 1863 by Jesuit Fr. Ramon Barua. It is one of the oldest parishes in Mindanao.
