MEMO TO: THE ADZU COMMUNITY
RE: 2018 ATENEO SPECIAL AWARDS CONVOCATION
I am happy to inform our community that the AdZU Board of Trustees has approved the conferment of
the Ateneo Special Awards on the following:
GENERAL CARLITO G GALVEZ JR– recipient of the ATENEO PEACE AWARD for his achievements as peace-oriented bridging leader in the military; most notably, his leadership role during the Marawi Siege as Commanding General of the Western Mindanao Command, and his contribution to the peace process as Deputy Commander for Peace Process of the Western Mindanao Command and as Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) that monitors the government and MILF ceasefire;
BRO CARLITO ‘KARL’ MORANTE GASPAR, CSsR – recipient of the PRO DEO ET PATRIA AWARD for his achievements as a scholar, community development worker, theologian, and friend-advocate of the indigenous peoples, faith organizations, the Church, and the poor, especially of Mindanao; and
ANTONIO MA ONRUBIA NIEVA (POSTHUMOUS) – recipient of the MAYOR CESAR C CLIMACO AWARD for his critical leadership role as founder of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, and his contribution as a journalist to the struggle to restore Press Freedom during the most turbulent times in Philippine history.
The Ateneo Special Awards Convocation shall be held on TUESDAY, 21 August, 2018 at 4:00 in the afternoon at the Multi-Purpose Covered Courts, Salvador Campus. There are two reasons why holding the awards ceremony on this day is auspicious and fitting. First, this is the day we commemorate Ninoy Aquino for his heroism in defense of true Philippine democracy. Second, it is on this day, seventeen years ago, that the Ateneo de Zamboanga became a full-fledged University.
Thus, for such an eventful occasion, I am enjoining the participation and attendance of our faculty in all units and the staff from central services, formation and social development units.
I congratulate our honorees for inspiring us and for serving as exemplars in their respective fields.
