Social Sciences Department to Host First Social Science Regional Conference

The Social Sciences Department of the School of Liberal Arts is set to host the First Regional Conference for Social Science Teachers and Scholars of Western Mindanao on November 6-7, 2009 in the Carlos Dominguez Hall, Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The theme of the conference is “Pursuing Intellectual Leadership in the Region through Social Science Teaching and Research”. This event is endorsed by the Department of Education (DepEd) City Schools Division OIC Superintendent Mrs. Norma M. Vecina and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Director Dr. Emmylou B. Yanga.

This conference aims to convene and organize Social Sciences teachers in the region; update teachers on the current trends in the Social Sciences/Studies curricula; and provide teachers in secondary and tertiary levels with the avenue and opportunity for academic engagement.

Among the issues and topics to be addressed by the conference speakers are Updates on the Social Sciences Curricula, Teaching and Research Methods in Social Science and Impact on Peace and Development in Western Mindanao, Roots of Conflict in Mindanao, and Thematic Issues in Social Sciences Teaching. Participants representing basic and higher education institutions from the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi can expect an “engaging, dynamic and interactive conference” according to its lead organizer, Dr. Rey Remotin, the Chair of the Social Sciences Department, “because the participants will be asked to share their best practices in teaching and research during panel discussions.”

This pioneering initiative is the Social Sciences Department’s contribution to the university’s intellectual leadership direction.
