SLA’s Cindy Quaile first to enjoy ARC’s new Research Chair Incentive Package

Ms Cindy Ann Quaile, faculty member of the School of Liberal Art’s (SLA) Social Sciences department, is the first to have completed a research under the support of Ateneo Research Center’s (ARC) revised Research Chair Incentive Package. The study entitled Assessing Zamboanga City’s Economy in View of the September 2013 Incursion was started by Ms Quaile sometime in November 2014 and was completed early this school year. Aside from being granted a 6-unit deload and receiving logistical support during the course of doing her research, Ms Qualie was also awarded an honorarium of P50, 000.00 on August 17, 2015, several days after submitting to the ARC the copy of her final report.

The results of the research have been presented to relevant government agencies and local government officials in July of this year as well as during the ARC Regional Research Forum 2015. The research examined the implications of the September 2013 armed conflict between the Philippine government and a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front on the economy of Zamboanga City. The study highlighted data that indicated the effect of the 2013 Incursion on the city’s financial, transport, and service sectors as well as on the sector on agriculture and the local sardine industry.

ARC’s new Research Chair Incentive Package grants AdZU faculty members from the tertiary units who are doing research several forms of support including continuation of full salary, deloading from teaching time starting at 6 units to as much as 21 units, advantageous work schedule, logistical support (i.e purchase of materials, research-related travel expenses, assistance from a preferred mentor, etc), and honoraria upon the completion of the work that ranges from Php 50,000 to as high as Php 100,000 depending upon the type of research being conducted. A similar incentive scheme has also been made available for faculty members from the basic education units. ARC’s new incentive package for researchers is believed to be one of the most generous schemes among higher education institutions in the entire country.

Several other faculty members who are about to complete their research-projects are poised to receive their incentives this school year.
