SACSI and JCI
celebrate National Water Week through Mangrove Planting

The Environment Program of Social Awareness and
Community Involvement (SACSI) Office, in partnership with the Junior Chamber
International Jambangan Junior Jaycees ADZU Chapter (JCI), joined the
celebration of the National Water Week last October 19-25, 2014. It is an
annual awareness week that aims to improve community understanding of water
issues. This year’s theme was
Water Sources- there are more than you think! The mangrove planting activity was the best way to
express our advocacy in preserving our waters. It was held at Lugoy Jutay,
Barangay Talon-Talon.

Seventy eight (78)
participants joined the said activity. They were composed of different
organizations such as Task Force Zamboanga- Marines group, Ecowatch
organization, SIBYA, volunteers of SACSI office and Office of the City of
Environment and Natural Resources ( OCENR).

The program aimed to
provide awareness and educate the participants on the essential functions and
importance of Mangroves. The field officer of OCENR, Mr Bong Velez, conducted
the on-site demonstration on how to plant mangrove propagules. A total of 1,250
propagules were planted in the area that day. SACSI hopes to continue the
advocacy by establishing a memorandum of understanding with the office of the
City of environment and Natural resources.
