ORGULLO: A Talk on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill

by: Jean Clarice Bue, The Beacon Publications Correspondent

The Passing of the SOGIE Bill as it seeks to create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community and penalize discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression is among the topics that are subject to varied opinions among lawmakers and the common Pinoy.

Last September 27, El Consejo Atenista, through SDO and in partnership with SACSI, SLA, and SALAAM-AdZU, hosted the second episode of Orgullo 2019, which focused on the SOGIE Equality Bill. The event was held at FWS Multi-Purpose Hall and was attended by Ateneans and faculty members.

Atty Bensaud Degusman, a Criminal and Political Law faculty of AdZU College of Law started the session centering on issues about the said bill, specifically on the difference between gender and sex, the bill’s proposal against discrimination, and who benefits from the bill.

The second guest speaker, Mr. Arthur Joshua Rodriguez, Five Outstanding Zamboangueño Young Leaders (FOZYL) awardee, tackled on issues concerning the effects of passing the bill, management of inflicted discrimination in a nonaggressive way, and several illustrative examples of the topic.

An open forum capped the talk.
