Languages Department to Host Rap Battle for National Arts Month

In observance of this year’s National Arts Month, the Languages Department of the School of Arts and Sciences of this university will host a satellite activity of the 2014 Taboan: The Philippine Writers’ Festival dubbed as Levanta: The Zamboanga Encuentro Rap Battle.

The event hopes to bring together some of the most talented rappers and fliptoppers in the city for a night of competition in “modern poetry,” with cash prizes at stake.

In her rationale, project manager and current Languages Department chair, Ms. May Lilian Maravilles pointed out that “fliptop and rap are perhaps this generation’s answer to the balagtasan… it is a creative exchange of opinions where participants debate on a wide variety of topics ranging from the mundane to the socially relevant… in 2013, Zamboanga witnessed one of its gloomiest years as the city was marred by hostilities… Zamboanga’s satellite activity uses fliptop and rap as avenues for the youth to levanta, Chavacano for rise… through this modern take on literature, Taboan hopes to provide a creative outlet for the views of La Bella’s young people.”

Taboan: The Philippine Writers’ Festival is an annual feature of the National Arts Month spearheaded by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts. This activity is a project of the National Committee on the Literary Arts and involves the staging of satellite activities in the different parts of the country –one of which is Zamboanga.

The public is invited to witness this program on February 27, Thursday at Paseo del Mar, from 5.00-8.00 in the evening.
