Empowering Educators Through GIS: A Training-Workshop on Visualizing Geospatial Data in AANR

November 2024

From November 11-15, 2024, Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), in collaboration with the Ateneo Center for Environment and Sustainability (ACES) of Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU), hosted a training-workshop on “Visualizing Geospatial Data in Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (AANR).” This initiative, aimed at faculty and staff from institutions across the ZAMBASULTA region (Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi), focused on equipping participants with foundational skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

GIS is a powerful tool for spatial data analysis, mapping, and research, with wide-ranging applications in agriculture, aquatic resources, and natural resource management. By integrating spatial and attribute data, GIS allows researchers to visualize complex relationships, identify patterns, and make data-driven decisions for sustainable development.

The training workshop emphasized these applications, highlighting how GIS can transform raw data into actionable insights that contribute to environmental stewardship and resource management.

This training-workshop represents a significant step toward building regional capacity in GIS and spatial data analysis. By equipping educators and administrators with these skills, the initiative contributes to more effective resource management, supports evidence-based policy-making, and strengthens the region’s resilience to environmental challenges.

As GIS continues to revolutionize research and planning in agriculture, aquatic, and natural resource management, initiatives like this workshop underscore its importance in fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Through this effort, WMSU, ACES, and AdZU have demonstrated the transformative potential of education and collaboration in addressing regional and global challenges.
