AdZU Wraps Up July, Celebrates St Ignatius Month

The
Ateneo de Zamboanga University had a university-wide celebration of the Feast
of San Ignacio de Loyola, patron and founder of the Society of Jesus, last July
2017.

Guided
by the Ignatian values of Magis, Cura Personalis, Service, and Companionship, the
St Ignatius Month featured a series of activities participated in by faculty,
staff, and students across all levels.

The
celebration kicked off simultaneously for the Grade School and Higher Education
Units on July 17, 2017 with a series of Novena Masses and Trivia Contests. An
exhibit also filled the college lobby in Salvador Campus engaging students in
games, literature, and other displays portraying the works and life of St
Ignatius de Loyola.

Other
activities on the month-long celebration included Slogan, Photography, and
Poster-Making Contests, Interpretative Dance, Storytelling, and Spoken Poetry
Contests, Quiz Bowls, and the Junior High School’s St Ignatius Day.

Finding God in All things

Finding
God in all things is the heart of every Atenean’s Ignatian Spirituality. It
leads to the awareness that God can be found in every one and in everything. Thus
the Ateneo, desiring to remain faithful to this aspect of Ignatian
Spirituality, highlights the festivities with the celebration of the St Ignatius
Mass across all units. Scheduled July 24 for the Grade School, July 25 for the
Junior High School, and July 28 for the Senior High School, Higher Education,
and Central Services, it is the community’s way of acknowledging God’s presence
and purpose in the apostolic mission of educating men and women for others.
Moreover, it is coming together as one community to thank God for helping the
Ateneo get pass challenges and strengthening its resolve to go to the
peripheries and serve those who are in need and marginalized.

Scholastic
Bro Ed Colmenares, homilist for the Higher Education and Central Services
Units, emphasized in his sharing “Perseverance” as a quality of St Ignatius worth
emulating. In his homily, he recounted that St Ignatius, despite facing several
defeats, rejections, and hardships in life had the grace to recognize God’s presence
guiding him like how a schoolmaster would towards a student. He invited the
community to see how God continues to guide, inspire, and fuel our thirst for
learning.

Amare et Servire

“… We remember coming here the first
time, our hearts full of ideas, of things to do to make a difference. There
were times when bridging the gap between what we thought we needed to teach and
what the students actually needed to learn was wide, but we just have to give our
energy, enthusiasm, honesty, respect, and love to our students… We have been
privileged to have had in our classroom many fine young people, some of them
taught us how to teach.”

The
Service Awards Ceremony, another highlight of the event, added to the significance
of the Ignatius Month Celebration. Held annually, it recognizes members of the
community for their years of
dedicated service to the Ateneo–
Service in the spirit of Magis and Cura Personalis, and service for God
and country. The Service Awards upholds that in everything, love and serve the
Lord.

The
Grade School and Junior High School had their awarding ceremony last July 24 while
the Senior High School, Higher Education, and Central Services had theirs
July28.
