AdZU HE Holds 72nd Commencement Exercises

“Stand up for what is right, even when it is not easy. Because the true measure of an Atenean is not just excellence, but purpose. Not just achievement, but service. As you step forward, carry with you the lessons, the values, and the spirit of this institution. Build your careers, but more importantly, build your characters. Pursue success, but never forget your mission. Achieve your dreams, but bring others with you.”

Commencement Address

With hearts filled with gratitude and hope for what lies ahead, the 855 graduates of the Class of 2026 of Ateneo de Zamboanga University Higher Education Unit celebrated a defining milestone during the 72nd Commencement Exercises held on May 22, 2026, marking not only the culmination of years of academic perseverance but also the beginning of a new journey for graduates called to serve with competence, compassion, and courage. Surrounded by proud families, mentors, and friends, the graduating class gathered in gratitude for the experiences, challenges, and triumphs that shaped their Atenean formation.

Leading the graduating class, valedictorian Nur-Qhadir S. Tahamid of the School of Management and Accountancy urged his fellow graduates to live with authenticity and compassion, emphasizing that the true meaning of Magis lies in responding to the struggles of others with love and solidarity.

“To the graduating batch of 2026: You are not being asked to become perfect people. You are being asked to become honest ones. Honest enough that, when you look at another person’s pain and see yourself in their wounds, if you can let that recognition move you to compassion rather than fear, then perhaps you will understand what Magis truly means. Not doing more, not giving more, not being more, but loving so much more that others no longer need to suffer alone.”

In his commencement address, Engr. Ibrahim M. Nuño challenged the graduates to remain steadfast in their values and to become principled leaders committed to serving others. He emphasized that true Atenean excellence is measured not solely by accomplishments, but by the courage to pursue what is right, the integrity to act with purpose, and the willingness to use one’s gifts in service of the greater good.

The ceremony concluded with a blessing from University President Fr. Ernald M. Andal, SJ, who encouraged the graduates to carry forward the values of integrity, moral courage, and responsible citizenship as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. He reminded them to remain faithful to their conscience, uphold the dignity of every person, and continue serving with a spirit rooted in faith and love of country.

“My dear Ateneans, go with animo, choose the straight path, protect the dignity of others, keep your conscience awake. And may God give you clear eyes, clean hands, and a brave heart, and send you forth for Zamboanga, for Mindanao, for our country, and for the greater glory of God. Always Pro Deo et Patria.” Fr. Ernald.

As they crossed the stage and received their diplomas, the Class of 2026 carried with them the values of excellence, integrity, and service deeply rooted in the Ignatian tradition. These graduates are ready to step into the world as men and women for others — prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to respond to the needs of society with faith and discernment.

Congratulations, Class of 2026!

Pro Deo et Patria!
