Through a strengthened culture of instructional leadership and collaborative formation, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) Basic Education Unit convened the “Basic Education Middle-Level Leadership Training 2026,” on May 14–15, 2026, at Regis Hall, Grade School Complex, Fr. William H. Kreutz, SJ Campus. With the theme “Strengthening Instructional Excellence through Accompaniment, Communication and Policy Practice,” the two-day training gathered Subject Area Coordinators (SACs) and Office Heads from the Grade School, Junior High School, and Senior High School in a structured formation designed to deepen reflection, strengthen collaboration, and enhance instructional leadership across departments.

Day 1 focused exclusively on the Subject Area Coordinators, centering on leadership through accompaniment and formative reflection. The session opened with welcome remarks by the Vice President for Basic Education Mr. Jeffrey O. Jalani.

Fr. Joseph Emmanuel “Joel” A. Liwanag, SJ facilitated the full-day session titled “Leading Through Accompaniment: A Formation for School Leaders,” underscoring SACs’ role as servant-leaders who accompany teachers through empathy, attentive listening, constructive feedback, and shared mission. The formation also provided space for reflection and dialogue, allowing participants to surface insights and reaffirm their commitment to mission-centered leadership.

Day 2 began with a synthesis of Day 1 learnings, as participants surfaced key reflections from the previous sessions. The morning session focused on strengthening leadership and communication skills through “Leading with Purpose: The Role of the Subject Area Coordinator,” facilitated by the Assistant Principals for Academics, Ms. Maria Doriza L. Faunillan, Ms. Jessa Jane S. Supilanas, and Mr. Salvador D.R. Memoracion Jr., which highlighted the vital role of SACs in instructional excellence and clarified their responsibilities and load assignments.

This was followed by Session titled “Real Talk: Communication Scenarios in Practice,” facilitated by the BEd Principals Ms. Elena B. Segurigan. Fr. Roberto M. Boholst, SJ, and Ms. Diane S. Candido, where participants engaged in practical discussions and real-life communication scenarios in the school setting.

In the afternoon, the Office Heads from the different departments joined the sessions on Policy Formulation and Implementation led by Mr. Jeffrey O. Jalani. The discussion emphasized clarity, consistency, collaboration, and accountability in policy practice across the Basic Education Unit.

The two-day event culminated in a solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. Roberto M. Boholst, SJ, offering gratitude for the meaningful and transformative experience.

Through this initiative, AdZU’s Basic Education Unit continues to cultivate empowered, reflective, and collaborative leaders who sustain instructional excellence and advance its mission of transformative education.
