Lantaka Campus Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Through Fire Safety Seminar

Strengthening emergency preparedness and reinforcing shared responsibility for campus safety, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) – Lantaka Campus conducted a Fire Safety Seminar on April 30, 2026, in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – Zamboanga City Fire District, equipping personnel, tenants, and partner offices with practical knowledge and response skills essential during fire-related emergencies.

As a campus space that houses University offices, partner institutions, and tenant establishments, the Lantaka Campus recognizes the importance of coordinated safety measures in protecting lives, safeguarding property, and ensuring operational continuity during emergencies. The seminar also served as part of the University’s ongoing preparations for the upcoming campus-wide fire drill.

The seminar was facilitated by resource speakers from the BFP – Zamboanga City Fire District Community Relations Section, FO3 Ciaranelle A. Tan, FO1 Shirlyn H. Bello, and FO1 Munaizer U. Gadjali. Through discussions and practical demonstrations, participants were oriented on fire prevention measures, emergency response protocols, and the proper use of fire safety equipment.

Participants included Lantaka Campus administrative staff, maintenance staff, housekeeping staff, janitorial personnel, and security personnel. Representatives from tenant establishments such as the DTI Provincial Office, Insular Oil, GMC Salon, Dental Spot, Iya Coffee Shop, Handang Law Office, Dwntwn Café, Intelliserv, and ALL Law Office were also in attendance, along with partner offices housed within the campus, namely Ateneo Center for Legal Services (ACLS), Ateneo Zamboanga-Mindanao Institute (AZMI), Alternative Learning and Teaching Excellence Center (ALTEC), Technology Business Incubator Office (TBI), Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), and Silsilah. The participation of various stakeholders underscored the value of collective responsibility and coordinated action in maintaining a safe and prepared working environment.

The seminar was made possible through the guidance and support of University Security Chief and Vice President for Administration for the Disaster Management Council Officer-in-Charge, Mr. Marven Gallego, whose leadership and coordination were instrumental in the implementation of the activity.

Beyond technical instruction, the seminar also served as a platform for clarifying institutional emergency procedures, including reporting protocols, evacuation routes, and initial response actions. Participants were likewise oriented on established campus systems designed to streamline coordination, reduce response time, and mitigate risks during fire-related incidents. Through this initiative, AdZU continues to advance a culture of preparedness, accountability, and proactive safety management in fostering a safer and more responsive campus environment.
