ADZU ARC hosts presentation on Mapping Study of Vulnerable Sectors in Coastal Areas of Zamboanga City

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through the Ateneo Research Center, was awarded by the Commission on Higher Education as one of the Higher Education Regional Research Center (HERRC) for three years starting SY 2013-2014.Through HERRC, ARC is set to conduct a 3-Phased research study on the theme Climate Change, Environment and Peace.

ARC has recently concluded Phase 1 of its study titled “Mapping Vulnerable Sectors in the Coastal Areas of Zamboanga City.” Phase 1 was participated by 14 selected coastal barangays namely Vitali, Sangali, Victoria, Manicahan, Bolong, Arena Blanco, Mariki, Campo Islam, Talon-Talon, Sinunuc, Ayala, Recodo, Talisayan and Labuan.

The public presentation of Phase 1’s results was held on SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 (FRIDAY) 8:30 am at the Carlos Dominguez Hall, Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

The GIS-Based Hazards Maps of the Coastal Areas of Zamboanga City was presented by Mr Mario S. Rodriguez. Ms Aurora C. Gonzales presented results of the study “Mapping Vulnerable Sectors of Selected Communities of Zamboanga City: Background of the Study” and Ms Regina P. Junio discussed “Understanding the Coastal Communities’ Social Vulnerability to Climate-Related Hazards”

At the end of the program Dr Teresita G. Montaño, ARC Director, distributed the Hazard Profiles of the 14 Participating Barangays. Bolong Barangay Chairman Hon. Antonio Evangelista expressed his gratitude to the university in his response.

Phase 2 of the study will focus on the impacts of Climate Change on Health, Human Security and Livelihood. Phase 3 will look into Local Governance, Planning and Policy implications of Climate Change.
