The U.S. Ambassador Scholarship Program is now accepting applications in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, according to an announcement from the U.S. Embassy in Manila and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The deadline for submission of applications is February 18, 2011. Application forms are available on the U.S. Embassy website, Virtual Presence Post – Mindanao http://mindanao.usvpp.gov.
The program, initiated by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy, provides a full four-year scholarship to qualified, outstanding high school graduates from the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi who have shown leadership potential and a commitment to serving their communities. Ateneo de Zamboanga University is the scholarship partner, and qualified scholars may pursue studies in the following fields: education, mass communication, computer science, accountancy, and others as determined by program officials.
The scholarship will cover full tuition; laboratory and other school fees; monthly stipend to cover board and lodging, school uniform, books, and transportation; and miscellaneous fees.
Upon graduation, the scholars are encouraged to return to their respective communities to render at least one year of community service and paid employment in their chosen careers. They will work with the university in arranging community service activities in line with their field of study.
Applicants may also get application materials at the American Corner at Notre Dame of Jolo College, the American Corner at Mindanao State University in Tawi-Tawi, or the American Shelf at Basilan Provincial Library, Isabela City.
