MEMO TO: THE ATENEO COMMUNITY
RE: SESQUICENTENNIAL JUBILEE OF JESUIT PRESENCE AND THE LAUNCHING OF ADZU’S CENTENNIAL JUBILEE
In my memo of 07 January 2009, I announced the Sesquicentennial Jubilee year of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines (1859 – 2009). I indicated the three-fold significance of the event: 1) the 150th anniversary of the Jesuit presence and ministry in the Philippines, 2) the 150th anniversary of the Jesuit education apostolate, and 3) the 150th anniversary of Jesuit presence and ministry in Mindanao. The main mission of the return of the Jesuits was to recommence missionary work in Mindanao.
We will celebrate the Sesquicentennial Jubilee on 03 July 2009, Friday, along with the launching of the Centennial Jubilee of AdZU (1912 – 2012). Jesuit education in Western Mindanao started with the creation of “Escuela Catolica” (a parochial elementary school attached to the Immaculate Conception Church) in 1912 under the leadership of Fr Manuel Sauras SJ. In 1916, “Escuela Catolica” was renamed “Ateneo de Zamboanga.”
Our celebration of the Sesquicentennial Jubilee and the launching of our Centennial Jubilee of Jesuit education will have the following activities:
- 10.00 AM – University Mass (Presider: Most Rev Abp Romulo G Valles DD, Homilist: Fr Jose Cecilio J Magadia SJ, Provincial Superior of Jesuits in the Philippines), MPCC.
- 2.30 PM: Public lecture on the return of the Jesuits to Mindanao and the background of the establishment of Ateneo de Zamboanga (Fr Jose S Arcilla SJ, Philippine Province Archivist and Historian), Carlos Dominguez Hall
- 5.30 PM: Photo Exhibit, The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago
Classes and offices will be closed from 10.00 AM to 12.00. I invite the administrators, faculty and staff to have lunch at the Bellarmine-Campion Quadrangle after the Mass.
Let’s give thanks to the Lord for all the graces received.
Antonio F Moreno SJ
