21 March 2013

MEMO TO: THE ADZU COMMUNITY

RE: NEW ADZU PRESIDENT

With great joy I inform our community that on 23 February 2013, the AdZU Board of Trustees elected Fr Karel S San Juan SJ as the fourth President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.  Out of deference to Fr Karel who was then making his 30-day retreat, the decision could not be conveyed to him and to the public immediately after his election.

Born on 16 June 1965 in Marikina City, Fr Karel studied at Roosevelt College (1970-74) in Marikina and earned his primary education at La Salle Greenhills (1978) in Mandaluyong.  He then went to the Philippine Science High School and obtained his secondary education in 1982.  He studied BS in Mathematics at the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) and graduated Cum Laude and Class Valedictorian in 1986.  After some years of work, he studied at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and earned his MA in Development Management with distinction in 1993.

He entered the Society of Jesus on 30 May 1998.  After finishing his studies in Philosophy at AdMU, he took his Ph D in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University, Spokane, USA, from 2002 to 2007.  He then completed his Bachelor in Sacred Theology Summa Cum Laude at the Loyola School of Theology, AdMU campus, in 2010.  He was ordained to the priesthood on 17 April 2010.  After his ordination, he became the Director of Emmaus Center for Psycho-Spiritual Formation.

Fr Karel is missioned to AdZU with a wide range of professional interests and work experiences.  Immediately after college, he went into social development work through political education, social advocacy, policy reform and research.  He became a development and management consultant to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, business organizations, Church and religious sectors.  He taught Development Studies and Development and Business Management at AdMU and AIM.  In recent past, he taught Leadership Studies, a Ph D program at AdMU. He has been giving workshops on formation programs, formative leadership, Ignatian spirituality, organizational development and other related fields.

Fr Karel is currently doing his tertianship (the final formal formation of Jesuits).  He will assume the office beginning second semester of SY 2013-14.  A University OIC for the first semester will be appointed in due time.

Congratulations Fr Karel and welcome to AdZU!
