Issues around HR 1109 – Charter Change Through Constitutional Assembly

15 June 2009

MEMO TO: THE ATENEO COMMUNITY

RE: ISSUES AROUND HR 1109 – CHARTER CHANGE THROUGH CONSTITUTIONAL ASSEMBLY

I attach in this memo for our consideration and reflection the CEAP (Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines) statement on HR 1109, otherwise known as the resolution of the House of Representatives to press for Charter change through Constitutional Assembly (Con-Ass) before the 2010 elections.  Earlier on, the CBCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines) called for vigilance and peaceful assembly to oppose HR 1109.  Many have argued against the motive, timing and manner of Charter change.

Please study the CEAP statement and other issues around HR 1109 in your classes and circles of discussion.  If you concur with the points raised in the CEAP statement, I invite you to a multi-sectoral interfaith prayer assembly on 19 June, Friday, 5.00 PM, Plaza Pershing, Zamboanga City.  Assembly time here in AdZU is 3.00 PM, near the main gate, La Purisima Campus.  The aim of this interfaith prayer assembly is to gather our reflections and prayers as we make known our opposition to HR 1109.

For your information and consideration.
