We are librarians, vessels containing a myriad of stories and epics reflecting that of a rich and vibrant region – Mindanao. Thus it is vital that we as Mindanaoans not only widen the scope of our cultural knowledge but also learn from it and preserve the fabric of our history so as not to be unraveled by malevolent and tyrannical hands.
It is with great pride that the Ateneo de Zamboanga University officially launched the Ateneo Zamboanga-Mindanao Institute or AZMI last September 14, 2022, 2 PM to 5PM at the FWS Multi-Purpose Hall, Salvador Campus.
This brand-new and exciting University arm pushes forth Ateneo’s mission of developing and protecting the history and culture of Zamboanga-Mindanao. As a research and resource arm, AZMI aims to curate, stimulate, collaborate, and inform – all in the name of deepening the appreciation and the knowledge of the Zamboanga Peninsula, Sulu Archipelago, and Mindanao.
The event is a two-part affair starting with introductory remarks and Institute Rationale delivered by Fr Karel S San Juan, SJ, President of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University followed by a presentation of the Institute Plans discussed by Ms Floraime O Pantaleta, AZMI Director. Important dignitaries from the City Government and other sectors also graced this momentous occasion.
Special guest Dr Oliver Charbonneau from the University of Glasgow shared a fascinating discussion about the book “Civilizational Imperatives: Americans, Moros, and the Colonial World” which was then followed by an excellent response done by Prof Hezekiah A Concepcion, Social Sciences Chairperson of AdZU.
The creation of AZMI promises a bright future for the study and preservation of the Zamboanga-Mindanao histories and cultures. With the Ignatian core values of compassion, excellence, and spirituality or Animo, may the institute inspire and push to action the region’s artists, researchers, activists, archivists, scholars, and many more – all in the service of God and country.
