Filipiniana Section

The Filipiniana Section keeps materials authored by Filipinos, references on the Philippines – its people, history, art, and culture, and other related resources that support the Philippine Studies Program of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Objectives:

  • To develop among students and other readers greater awareness and appreciation for Philippine publications.
  • To acquaint the students with the various types of Filipiniana resources available in the library.
  • To develop among users the skills on the use of Filipiniana guides and other related materials for easy access to the collection.

What is Filipiniana?

  • These are local publications by local authors on a subject that is truly Filipino.
  • These are materials published abroad, whether by a Filipino or foreign author, on a Philippine subject.
  • These are publications dealing with humanities, social science, etc. which identify the Filipino.

Services

  • Readers’ Assistance – gives reference assistance to both Undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Bibliographical Service – prepares bibliographic listings requested by faculty members and administrator.
  • Information File Service – prepares listings of specific significant topic valuable for research studies gathered from various Filipiniana materials, is serve as additional source of information.
  • Current Awareness – informs the users about newly received publications and displays current significant events on bulletin board.
  • Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) – selects materials on a particular topic and sends the collection resources to some faculty members, or administrators who may have requested the needed data.

Access to the Collection

Information about the Filipiniana books can be retrieved through the On – line Public Access Catalog (OPAC), situated at the second floor of the Main Library.

Other Information

  • Library users have direct access to the Filipiniana collection. The Filipiniana materials are open to both undergraduate and graduate users.
  • All Filipiniana books are for room use only. This rule also applies to theses/dissertations, rare books and Special Collections.
  • Special Collections can be used on an hourly basis (just like the books on the Reserved Section). To avail of these materials, users are asked to present proper identification and sign-up on book cards.
  • Due to limited space, the rare materials are not placed together with the Special Collection.
  • Roll maps may be borrowed for classroom use only as visual aid. This material must be returned to the library immediately after the class period. To avail of this service, users are required to present their school IDs and submit a filled-up loaning form signed by the Filipiniana Librarian and approved by the Library Director. The “permit” form is shown to the person manning the Control Section.
