Ateneo hits 40-year mark in Graduate Education
The Ateneo de Zamboanga
University Graduate School celebrates its 40th year of service in the field of
education this year, 2017.
Slated as a three-year event, the
anniversary kicked off with a soft opening October last year, followed by a
series of activities, including seminars, workshops, and fora by the different
Schools and Colleges running the graduate programs of the Ateneo.
Continuing the celebration, the
School of Liberal Arts (SLA) will hold a series of Lecture-Discussions on Social
Science on March 3, 2017, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the College Audio-Visual
Room in Salvador Campus, La Purisima. It will commence with a talk on Argument
Against Lowering Age of Criminal Liability to 13 Years Old by Jayson V
Sabdilon, Chair, Psychology Department, and will end with a discussion on the
US Federal System: Historical and Practical Considerations for the Philippines
by Hezekiah A Concepcion, a faculty of the Social Sciences Department.
Earlier, SLA’s Departments of
Philosophy and Religious Studies held a Forum on the Self at the Crux of the
Environment and Spirituality, with the theme, “Environment, Digitization, and
Theology,” also at the College AVR. At the “crux” of the program were
several presentations covering topics on Philosophy and Ignatian Spirituality.
Another seminar on English
Language: Theory and Practice was conducted by SLA’s Languages Department last
year at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall in Salvador campus. On the theme,
English in a Multilingual Setting, topics included Translanguaging: Then, Now
and Later, World Englishes in the Face of Globalization, Mother tongue-based
Instruction: Moving Forward to Multilingual Education, English as Lingua
Franca, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Also taking part in the
celebration, the School of Education (SEd) held a 2-day lecture on Mentoring
the Mentors: Advancing Skills in Thesis and Dissertation Mentoring last February
24-25, 2017 at the City Inn Hotel with Dr Jerome A Ouano, Chair of the Counselling
and Educational Psychology Department, De La Salle University in Manila as
guest lecturer.
Earlier, a lecture on how to
Enhance Scholarly Work through Effective Literature Reviews was delivered to
PhD students by Dr Robin A Delos Reyes and Dr Dorothy Joann Lei O Labrador,
both faculty of the SEd, while Romeo A Rabajante, chair of the Dept of
Information Technology (IT) of the College of Science and IT, taught MAED students
how to Build a Digital Classroom through NEO LMS.
The College of Nursing, for their
part, conducted a series of outreach activities such as Bloodletting at the
Salvador campus and Mangrove planting in Talon-Talon, among others.
Considered to be a catalyst in
the development and progress of Zamboanga City and Western Mindanao, the Ateneo
Graduate School considers two of its primary concerns, “to upgrade the professionals in Region IX and to have a strong pool
of academicians in the graduate level,” according to Dr Elenida L Maizo, Graduate School faculty who sat as Dean from
June 1995 to June 15, 2001.
The Graduate school opened in
1976, in consortium with the Ateneo de Davao University. The first program
offered was the Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), during the
term of the late Fr Asterio Katigbak SJ, then Rector and President, with
Juanito Chiong, Dean of College, and Remedios F Marmoleño, Coordinator.
Other masteral degree programs followed: Public
Administration (MPA) in 1978, Nursing (MAN) in 1979, Guidance and Counseling
(MSGC) in 1980, and Education (MAED) in 1981. All these post-graduate courses
were developed during the period of office of Fr Ernesto Carretero SJ, who sat first
as Dean in 1977, then as President of Ateneo in 1979.
