ACLG facilitated the conduct of Sewing Skills training for Yakan Women

The Ateneo Center for Leadership and Governance (ACLG) facilitated the conduct of skills training on “Bag Making” for Yakan Women of Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City. This was in partnership with Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) IX, through the office of the District I Representative Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco- Salazar.

The training was scheduled every Friday, Saturday and Sunday to complement and will not be in conflict with the days of their work. It started on April 13 and culminated on May 19, 2012 with a total of 11 training days. There were a total of 22 Yakan women who graduated from the skills training.

They were trained to create and sew quality bags of different designs and purposes by Ms Dionisia Quisay, who served as a trainer from TESDA IX. During the culminating program, the trainees revealed that most of them do not know how to operate a sewing machine but as the training progresses all of them learned and were able come up with beautiful creations.

The activity is one of the activities of the ACLG under its Social Entrepreneurship Program. It aims to cater as well as to collaborate with public and private sectors in providing trainings and other services on livelihood to communities. Agustin Basilio Jr/ ACLG
