July 29, 2025 – Today marked an important milestone as we presented the results of the study on Single-Use Plastic Alternatives: An Analysis of Cost and Consumer Preferences in Zamboanga City. This research initiative by Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through the Ateneo Center for Environment and Sustainability (ACES), examined the critical aspects of plastic waste management in our community.

The Phase 1 of the study involved a comprehensive desk review of existing Solid Waste Management resolutions across six target barangays: Ayala, Tulungatung, Cawit, Maasin, Sta. Catalina, and Recodo. Phase 2 presented a detailed cost-benefit analysis comparing single-use plastics with their sustainable alternatives. Finally, Phase 3 explored the consumer preferences regarding these alternatives.

We were honored to present the findings in a validation discussion with representatives from various sectors. The delegates from Spanish Red Cross and members of Philippine Red Cross joined us, along with officials from the six barangays. Government agencies including the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Department of Science and Technology, Environmental Management Bureau, and Department of Trade and Industry were also present alongside partner organizations: Green Technology, RC Plastics, and Action Against Hunger.

Mr. Jey Perez of ACES and Ms. Welma Omboy, Director of Center for Community Extension Services, presented the study findings, followed by an encouraging message from ACES Director Mr. Emir Epino, who emphasized on the ways forward in crafting a policy agenda to the city government regarding single-use plastics.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Philippine Red Cross and Spanish Red Cross for their invaluable partnership in this initiative. We also would like to thank Social Development Unit Director, Ms. Aurora Gonzales, for her support in this initiative. This research represents a significant step forward in our collective efforts to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives in Zamboanga City.
