SLA & ICRC: For the promotion of International Humanitarian Law

“Even wars have limits.”

During times of conflict, it is necessary that all local and global citizens are aware of their rights, duties, and responsibilities outlined in the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

In its efforts to promote peace within Mindanao, AdZU and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) officially entered into an agreement, making both active proponents of IHL through its integration into AdZU’s academic curriculum and extra-curricular activities last Tuesday, 12 February 2019 at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, Salvador Campus.

In pursuit of holistic formation through the development of reflective awareness and respect for human dignity, AdZU – SLA shall continue its efforts to help promote awareness and understanding of IHL in hopes of a more peaceful and secure Mindanao.

Thus, more seminars and training sessions for the promotion and awareness of IHL shall be pursued in future academic years.

In behalf of University President Father Karel San Juan, present in the signing was Dr Robin Delos Reyes, Dean of AdZU-School of Liberal Arts (AdZU-SLA). To represent ICRC, Atty Evecar Cruz-Ferrer, IHL Coordinator & Legal Advisor of ICRC, signed the MOA on their behalf.

To jumpstart this partnership, the Philosophy Department of AdZU’s School of Liberal Arts and ICRC conducted a colloquium within the same day, where ICRC representatives informed AdZU students from the different college units of the School of Liberal Arts, School of Management and Accountancy, School of Education, and College of Law on the set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict for humanitarian reasons, more commonly known as the Law of Armed Conflict.
