ECE Students’ MR BIN Assists Brgy San Roque with Zero Waste Initiative

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University, in tandem with Barangay San Roque, launches the Barangay’s latest Zero Waste Initiative–enabling the residents to turn PET bottles, a common household trash, into basic commodities.

The Machine for Recycling Bottles with Incentive Noting or MR BIN is a collaboration of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Engineering Department and Barangay San Roque where residents get corresponding points for every PET bottle that they turn over to the Barangay. These points may be redeemed in exchange for basic commodities.

MR BIN is a capstone project of 5th year AdZU BS Electronics and Communications Engineering (BS ECE) students John Rey Navarro and Rex Christian Endozo under the mentorship of Engineer Louie Gallardo, current Engineering Department Chair.

The project belongs to a roster of innovations by AdZU students that are responsive to the needs of the community and is one of the many initiatives of the University to support the call of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP) of Caring for Our Common Home.
