AdZU JHS this week, July 3-7, 2017

This July, we celebrate
different events such as the Nutrition Month and the National Disaster
Consciousness Month. But for all Jesuit schools, July is dedicated to the
founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius of Loyola. 

Hence, allow me to share every
week an excerpt from the autobiography of St. Ignatius collated as an appendix
in the booklet, “Characteristics of Jesuit Education.” This excerpt will begin
in Ignatius’ journey from Jerusalem to Paris and Rome. We will start where the
movie “Ignacio de Loyola” has ended. 

1.  IGNATIUS,
THE FIRST JESUIT SCHOOLS, AND THE RATIO STUDIORUM          

From
Jerusalem to Paris 

Though he was thirty years
old, Ignatius, went to school, sitting in class beside the young boys of the
city to learn grammar; two years later, he moved on to university studies at
Alcalá. When he was not studying he taught others about the ways of God and
shared his Spiritual Exercises with them. But the Inquisition would not permit
someone without training in theology to speak about spiritual things. Rather
than keep silent about the one thing that really mattered to him, and convinced
that God was leading him, Ignatius left Alcalá and went to Salamanca. The
forces of the Inquisition continued to harass him until finally, in 1528, he
left Spain entirely and moved to France and the University of Paris. 

Ignatius remained in Paris
for seven years. Though his preaching and direction in Barcelona, Alcalá, and
Salamanca had attracted companions who stayed with him for a time, it was at
the University of Paris that a more lasting group of “friends in the Lord” was
formed. Peter Favre and Francis Xavier
were his roommates, “whom he later won for God’s service by means of the
Spiritual Exercises.” Attracted by the same challenge, four others soon joined
them. Each of these men experienced God’s love personally, and their desire to
respond was so complete that their lives were totally transformed. As each one
shared this experience with the others, they formed a bond of community which
was to last throughout their lives.

4. Points to Ponder 

A farmer once caught a young
eagle in the forest, brought it home and raised it among his ducks and turkeys.
Five years later, an environmentalist came to visit him and saw the bird.
“That’s an eagle, not a chicken!” he said. “Yes,” said the farmer, “but I’ve
raised it to be a chicken.” “Still,” said the environmentalist, “it has a wing
span of fifteen feet. It’s an eagle!” “It will never fly” said the farmer. The
environmentalist disagreed and they decided to put their argument to the test.

First, the environmentalist
picked up the eagle and said, “Eagle, thou art an eagle, thou dost belong to
the sky and not to this earth; stretch forth thy wings and fly.” The eagle saw
the chickens and jumped down. The next day the environmentalist took the eagle
to the top of the house, said the same thing, and let the eagle go. Again, it
spotted the chickens below and fluttered down to join them in feeding.

“One more try,” said the
environmentalist. He took the eagle up a mountain. The trembling bird looked
around, and then the environmentalist made it look into the sun. Suddenly, the
eagle stretched out its wings, gave a mighty screech, and flew away, never to
return.

People may say you are just a
hunk of flesh. But deep inside, you have a spirit created in God’s image!
