1.   IGNATIUS,
THE FIRST JESUIT SCHOOLS, AND THE RATIO STUDIORUM

From
Paris to Rome

In
1534, this small group of seven
companions
journeyed together to a small monastery chapel in Montmartre,
outside of Paris, and the only priest among them – Pierre Favre – celebrated a
Mass at which they consecrated their lives to God through vows of poverty and
chastity. It was during these days that they “determined what they would do,
namely, go to Venice and Jerusalem, and spend their lives for the good of
souls”.98 At Venice the six other companions were ordained as priests, Ignatius
among them. But their decision to go to Jerusalem was not to become a
reality.

Recurring
warfare between Christian and Islamic armies made travel to the East
impossible. While they waited for the tension to ease and pilgrim journeys to
be resumed, the companions spent their days preaching, giving the Exercises,
working in hospitals and among the poor. Finally, when a year had passed and
Jerusalem remained inaccessible, they decided that they would “return to Rome
and present them-selves to the Vicar of Christ so that he could make use of
them wherever he thought it would be more for the glory of God and the good of
souls”

4. Points to Ponder

A man once sat down to have dinner with his
family. Before they began to eat, the family members joined hands around the
table and the man said a prayer, thanking God for the food, the hands that had
prepared it and for the source of all life.

During the meal, however, he
complained at length about the staleness of the bread, the bitterness of the
coffee and a bit of mould he found on one edge of the lump of cheese.

His young daughter asked him,
„Daddy, do you think God heard you say grace before the meal?‟

„Of course, honey‟ he
answered confidently.

Then she asked, „Do you think
God heard everything that was said during dinner?‟ The man answered, „Why, yes
I believe so. God hears everything.‟

She thought for a moment and
then asked, „Daddy, which do you think God believed?‟

Truly, the Lord hears
everything we say during a day, not only those words that are addressed
specifically to Him. Make everything you say today worthy of His
overhearing.
