Ateneo to launch Poverty book on March 28; brings to fore plight of the poor
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) will launch the book Overcoming Poverty: Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives, Principles and Practices on March 28, 2016, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Carlos Dominguez Hall, Learning Resource Building of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, La Purisima St., this city.
Written by a diverse group of social scientists, a medical doctor/health educator and economists- academicians all, the book presents the issue of poverty from various perspectives and explains principles and theories and practical strategies to address poverty, including coordination among anti-poverty workers and involvement of the various stakeholders.
It is especially written for “NGOs and faith-based development workers, government personnel in anti-poverty work, private sector corporate social responsibility advocates, and the general public interested in understanding poverty”.
With the Foreword by Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, and ADZU President Fr. Karel S. San Juan, S.J., the book tackles the poverty issue from a political-economic perspective, including the role of institutions and governance in perpetuating poverty in “Walang Mahirap kung Walang Corrupt” by Ateneo de Manila University Economics Professor Dr. Fernando T. Aldaba; from a point of view of health and the efforts of the health education sector in the story of the first medical school in Mindanao established primarily to address the underserved health needs of the poor in “Health For More: Health Disparity and Health Education” by ADZU Dean of School of Medicine Dr. Fortunato L. Cristobal.
Poverty Alleviation through Livelihood Creation and Wealth Sharing is the Development Management viewpoint provided by Mario Antonio G. Lopez, associate professor of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City.
Book Author-Editors Dr Carmela D. Ortigas, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) professor of psychology, embarks on a journey in the Psychology of Philippine Poverty and its Impact on Cultures, by offering a framework for programs designed to break the cycle of poverty, while ADMU professor in sociology and anthropology Dr. Mary Racelis, looks at poverty through the Socio–Cultural lenses as seen by the poor in “Kahit Dukha’y Dakila.”
“Eyes on the Budget” by Dr. Ronald U. Mendoza, associate professor of economics at AIM, allocates Innovations in Social Budgeting and Citizen Participation, by illustrating the link between budgeting and social financing. Mendoza also writes the Epilogue.
Overcoming Poverty is jointly published by the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and C & E Publishing, Inc.
