Rodriguez talks on Geographic Information Systems to Regional Development Council

Ateneo de Zamboanga University Professor Mario Rodriguez presented to the Regional Development Council (RDC IX) the 3D flood mapping and modeling project called DREAM-LiDAR.

The presentation was made specifically to members of RDC’s Regional Land Use Committee during their orientation meeting for the preparation of the Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF) for its technical working group on July 31, 2015.

DREAM-LiDAR is a nationwide project undertaken by the Department of Science and Technology. ADZU, along with 18 other schools all over the country are implementing the project in their respective areas.

Rodriguez is project leader for the ADZU DREAM-LiDAR project. His team’s area of coverage is the Zamboanga Archipelago.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging and is the technology behind the project’s ability to produce highly accurate 3D maps and models.
Rodriguez presentation was meant to enhance the knowledge of participants about spatial development planning.

Rodriguez talked about the uses of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for capturing, storing, manipulating, analyzing, managing, and presenting all types of spatial or geographical data.

The LiDAR project started in 2014 and is expected to end middle of next year. At the end of the project, the team is expected to have produced highly accurate flood maps and models which the public can use for better disaster management.
