Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God

Gospel Lk 2:16-21

“And Mary kept all these things, reflecting them in her heart.”

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God, a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. This feast helps bring home the reality of the Incarnation. God truly and eternally united Himself to humanity. In Jesus, God truly became man, and that man had, and still has, a mother.

We can imagine what Mary had gone through from the moment the angel Gabriel announced that she was to be the mother of the Savior up to the time of Jesus’ birth. The young Mary carried the child in her womb for nine months. She had to endure the discomforts of pregnancy, the long travel to Bethlehem, the anxiety of finding a safe, clean place to give birth, the pains of giving birth without the help of doctors or nurses. What could have been the thoughts and feelings of Mary as she went through all these? What could she be thinking while looking at her baby, the Son of God, born in a lowly manger, surrounded by animals, visited and paid homage by shepherds?

I invite you now to silently join Mary, looking at her son and feeling the presence of God. Take time to pause, be present in that Christmas scene. See what Mary sees, feel what Mary feels.

Come! Let us adore Him.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.
