CCES and Dr Maminta conduct Wheel of Hope: A Free Wheelchair Project

The Center for Community Extension Services (CCES), with its vision of improving the quality of life of people from far flung communities, has come into partnership with Dr. Napoleon Maminta, a Filipino doctor based in the US who accessed 50 units of wheelchair from the US for indigent PWDs. The overall goal of the project is to aid poor individuals with physical disabilities by granting them a free wheelchair; hoping that through this project individuals who suffer social stigma because of their condition, economic prejudice, and exposure to verbal abuse and ridicule may be empowered. The organizers would also like to give them the opportunity to wheel themselves around without having to depend on others at all times.

The project ran from 0ctober 2013 – July 2014. The process included a. Identification and listing of beneficiaries, b. Assessment, c. Orientation and d. Turnover of units. 50 Indigent individuals (46 from different barangays within the city, 3 from Jolo, Sulu, and 1 from Lamitan, Basilan) benefited from the generosity of Dr Maminta and his friends.
