Juni Page Grapa and Sayid C. Cedicol won in the Philippine Art Awards 2013-2014 exhibition and awards ceremony for the regional level held at the Yuchengco Museum in Makati City on March 27.
Artists from different regions in the Philippines participated and showcased their artistry during the annual ceremony. Among the winners in the regional level were Grapa and Cedicol.
Grapa’s artwork was a wooden sculpture entitled “Kumaw.” Grapa is a known local artist from Dipolog City.
Cedicol, a military doctor from Zamboanga WESMINCOM used pen and ink on hard board. His artwork is entitled “Ang paglalakbay ng lason kay Socrates (Langit, Lupa, Impyerno).”
“I joined the PAA because it is one of the most prestigious competitions for visual artists. I also wanted to gauge myself in terms of technique and concept. I have been a painter for 20 years, and it was high time I joined a big competition,” shares Cedicol.
Cedicol’s artpiece was bought by Senator Serge Osmeña’s wife, Bettina Osmeña.
“Now that I won, it was just a form of validation. It opens up a lot of opportunities for me,” he added.
The Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University serves as the PAA- Regional Collecting Center for Western Mindanao.
PAA is a nationwide visual arts competition which aims to support and develop Philippine Contemporary Art. It also helps increase the exposure of the various artworks and artists in the Philippines.
Among the guest of honors were national artist Ben Cabrera, Senator Bongbong Marcos, Congresswoman Delphine Lee, Bettina Lopez-Osmeña, and Irene Marcos-Araneta.
