In response to the call of ecological stewardship for “New Mindanao” – The College Faculty Club (CFC) of ADZU led by its President Mr. Jose Journal Pañgan and Vice President Mr. Perry Ian Dela Cruz, in partnership with the Center for Community Extension Services headed by Director Ms. Loreta Sta. Teresa, together with her staff, and in cooperation with the Manicahan Barangay Councils- Kagawad Ding Tanaria with Manicahan Barangay Tanods and Manicahan SK Chair Charice Billones, had embarked in planting trees at Manicahan Watershed Area, situated in Manicahan, Zamboanga City.
This momentous event was made possible with the full participation of the important figures in the ADZU community. These were: ADZU Main Library Director Ms. Florinda Tabanao and her librarians, who had helped in the documentation of the event; School of Arts and Sciences- Chairperson of Philosophy department Mr. Robert Mayonila, along with his very dynamic faculty; Office of Student Affairs staff Mr. Teddy Jambre; Registrar staff Ms. Annie Mendoza; and School of Management faculty Mr. Francis Arroyo and Mr. Dexter Velez.
The group expressed their deepest thanks to the following: first, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – PENRO Officer Mr. Ramon Baguiao. Mr. Baguiao provided (200) Mahogany seedlings to be planted, and second, Mr. Ricardo Marmoleño of (Ric and Remmy’s Bakeshop) who shared the participants a space of his land for the planting event. The participants felt the sense of fulfillment after planting these species despite the challenging weather conditions during the tree planting. It must be reminisced that the planters encountered difficulties like- hard rain, muddy and slippery contour for planting, and a soil eroded venue fit for planting. This is the participants’ way of communing with mother earth. Living in harmony with nature is one of the many ways of obtaining inner peace. The group believes that this act of showing kindness to mother earth is just the beginning of the many bolder, bigger, and wiser steps in the future.
