Ateneo kicks off homecoming with Mass, switching on of Christmas tree

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Alumni homecoming kicked off today, November 29, with the Jubilarians’ Mass at the University Church of the Sacred Heart chapel, at the Salvador campus in La Purisima St, this city. Following the Eucharistic celebration was the switching on of the lights of the Christmas tree at the Bellarmine Campion Centennial grounds. This will be followed by the neon-themed parade around town, and culminate with the welcome program and fellowship night at the backfield.

A highlight of the annual reunion of the Blue Eagles is the Blessing of the Capilla del Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar and the Fr Duffy Conference Room, and the Unveiling of the Markers of both structures tomorrow, November 30, at the FWS Building.

The Capilla del Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar is a gift from the High School Class of 1977, while the Fr. Charles Duffy, S.J. Conference Room, is from the High School Class of 1967.

“It is with profound gratitude that the Ateneo de Zamboanga University presents the Capilla del Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar and the Fr. Charles Duffy, S.J. Conference Room,” said Fr San Juan, expressing his appreciation for the donation from two batches of high school alumni.

The two new structures address a need of the University community, particularly the Senior High school unit, for new venues for meetings and for worship and prayer.

“We offer to God these structures, and pray that his abundant blessings be upon those who have contributed to realize these projects and all who will use this Capilla and Conference Room, “ Fr San Juan added.

Expected to be present during the blessing and unveiling are Fr. Jason K. Dy, SJ, the Chapel Designer; members of the Jesuit Community in Zamboanga City led by their superior Fr Louis Catalan, SJ; members of AdZU HS Batch 1977 and AdZU Batch 1967; and members of the University community including the Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty, and staff.

Conrado Balatbat, director of the Alumni Relations Office is enjoining all AdZU alumni, especially jubilarians, to come “home to the nest” and participate in the other activities slated for the homecoming on December 1st: in the morning: the General Assembly and elections, the Homecoming Mass, and in the evening, the Blue and White Night at 6:00 at the Palacio del Sur, Gov Camins Ave, this city.
