WETLANDS FORUM: Climate
Change and its Effect on Wetlands
ADZU GeoSAFER Mindanao ZAMBASULTA, together with Ateneo
Center for Environment and Sustainability conducted the “Wetlands Forum:
Climate Change and its Effects on Wetlands” in Carlos Dominguez Hall, ADZU
Campus, Zamboanga City. With the goal of transmitting to the new generation the
importance of wetlands, the forum targeted the different college and high
students as the main audience of the forum. Present in the said activity were the
students and teachers from Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Pilar
College, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST),
Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College and Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
Ms. Georgina L. Fernandez, Supervising Ecosystem
Management Specialist of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources
Office of Zamboanga Sibugay, discussed to the audience the effects of Climate
Change to our Wetlands. She also further discussed on how wetlands serve as a natural
solution to Climate Change, and most importantly, how these wetlands could be
conserved. Her presentation was followed by Ms. Amme Camille Marba, a Licensed
Geologist and Science Research Specialist II of ADZU GeoSAFER ZAMBASULTA, who
focused her discussion on how wetlands are agents in preventing soil erosion,
and how erosion could lead to major disasters in the area.
The activity wrapped up with an open forum, wherein students were able to ask
the speakers on the topics they’ve discussed and the giving of certificates to
the speakers.
ADZU GeoSAFER Mindanao: ZAMBASULTA continually partners
with different offices and organizations, such as the Ateneo Center for
Environment and Sustainability, to spread awareness and promote different ways
to achieve disaster resiliency in the region.
