SOMETHING TO PONDER

Where
Holy Encounter Leads

The story of Christ’s coming as a child is filled with
miracles: angels coming in person and in dreams; a child born to a virgin; a
mysterious star; holy secrets spoken to shepherds and wise men. The glory of
this coming has the power to entrance us year after year as we make the journey
through Advent and find ourselves, yet again, at the manger. But the child grew
up, was baptized by John, and embarked on a life that few if any could fathom
or desire. And for each person who encountered this life of God-among-us, the
glory and gratitude led also to personal pilgrimage and transformation. Even
now, these glorious and enlightening events create holy encounter, which leads
us to engagement with God that is personal. Mary and Joseph were forever
changed, as were other players in this sacred drama, from the shepherd to John
the Baptist and those who would become Jesus’ disciples. They invite us by
their examples to be courageous enough to stand at the manger but then follow
the child to wherever he desires to take us.
