HAPAGASA 120 Days Feeding Program: A Lifeline for Barangay Salaan’s Children

The HAPAGASA 120 Days Feeding Program, of the Center for Community Extension Services, is set to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and residents in Barangay Salaan, Zamboanga City. With the barangay ranking third in the city for the highest prevalence of underweight and wasted children under five, the need for intervention is urgent. This community-driven initiative, which will launch in February 2025, aims to combat malnutrition and significantly improve the nutritional status of the community’s most vulnerable members.

The program’s preparation phase has been meticulously designed, with key activities ensuring its seamless integration and success:

Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) Orientation. Barangay officials were equipped with essential knowledge and tools through an orientation session. This session emphasized the importance of collaboration, coordination, and resource management, ensuring that the program is well-integrated into the daily life of the community.

Community and Beneficiary Orientation. To ensure full community engagement, an orientation for residents was held, educating them about the program’s objectives and the crucial role of Manna Pack in providing the nutrients needed for healthier growth. Parents, especially those of malnourished children, were encouraged to actively participate and support the initiative.

Demo Cooking Session. On November 21, 2024, a hands-on demo cooking session was conducted for parent leaders, teaching them how to prepare nutritious meals using Manna Pack and locally available ingredients. This practical session empowered the leaders with valuable skills they can apply throughout the feeding program.

With the active involvement of local officials, the Barangay Health Center, and the community, the HAPAGASA Feeding Program will provide consistent and nutritious meals to children in need over 120 days, beginning in February 2025. The program’s focus on addressing malnutrition, particularly among children, and promoting long-term health and development will help build a brighter future for Barangay Salaan’s families.

The success of this program lies in the power of community collaboration. Together, we can make a difference, ensuring that no child in Barangay Salaan goes hungry and that every child has the opportunity to grow healthier and stronger.
