A(H1N1) Alert – Suspension of All Grade School Classes

02 July 2009

MEMO TO: THE ATENEO COMMUNITY

RE: A(H1N1) ALERT – SUSPENSION OF ALL GRADE SCHOOL CLASSES

I regret to inform our community that yesterday the local DOH officials confirmed the first case of A(H1N1) in Zamboanga City.  The patient, one of our Grade School students, was ill since 22 June, but has complied with DOH requirements of anti-viral treatment and home quarantine.  Last week, medical authorities declared the patient healthy and no longer contagious.

However, since over the last two weeks, a total of 166 cases of flu-like illness have been noted, our local DOH is advising us to suspend all Grade School classes effective tomorrow until 13 July 2009. I am sustaining the recommendation of our local DOH authorities.

I have also instructed the PPO to sanitize their classrooms and install hand sanitizers in strategic places of our two campuses.  I ask everyone to stay healthy, comply with the DOH guidelines that I have issued in an earlier memo (eg cough/sneeze etiquette, frequent washing of hands, stay at home when having fever and other symptoms of A[H1N1],  communion by the hand).  I urge those who show symptoms of A(H1N1) to visit our clinic, see their doctors or contact City Health Officials (Tel 991 3780; 991 5421) and comply with DOH guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.

I thank our medical team led by Dr Edwina D Cabato, AdZU-SOM, SDC, College of Nursing, the City Health Officials and DOH for the work they have been doing since the 3rd week of June: contact tracing, making campaigns to educate our people regarding A(H1N1) and monitoring suspected cases.

Our Sesquicentennial Jubilee of the return of the Jesuits and launching of AdZU’s Centennial Jubilee celebration tomorrow continues as planned.  Let our gratitude be filled with prayers for our community and Zamboanga City.

For your information and guidance.
