AdZU Titans, 3rd in Chavacano Tilt

The
Ateneo de Zamboanga University Senior High School placed 3rd in the 6th
Dia de Fundacion de Chavacano 1st Chavacano Quiz bee Competition
held June 23, 2017 at the Centro Latino Paseo Del Mar, Zamboanga City.

The
competition, open to all Elementary and High Schools in Zamboanga City, had sixteen
participating public and private schools for the high school category.

The
AdZU SHS Team was composed of Ma Chessca N Dondoyano (Grade11-HUMSS), Ma Lana Jean M Tabobo, and Vinz Harrold E Basilio (Grade12-HUMSS Hopkins). They garnered a
total of 26 points allowing them to finish in 3rd place. They were coached by SHS faculty Karen Soler.

The
1st Chavacano Quiz Bee, featuring
easy, moderate, and difficult rounds tested the contestants’ adeptness in the Chavacano
language, particularly its orthography, usage, and history, amongothers. Dr.
Jose Genaro Yap-Aizon, Assistant City Administrator and Special Assistant to
the Mayor led and facilitated the competition.

Held with the 2nd
Chavacano Speech Choir featuring Chavacano piece entitled “Desperta, Zamboanga,” the Quiz Bee
posed as one of the highlights in the Dia de Fundacion de Chavacano, an annual
event which recognizes the Chavacano language and its founding, and aims to
preserve and promote its usage among residents and new settlers.

By virtue of Ordinance 374, the Dia de Fundacion is
held every 23rd of June and highlighted by activities that focus, emphasize,
and celebrate the continuing legacy of the Chavacano language.

It aims to
preserve and promote the usage of Chavacano, including its culture and
heritage, by all residents and new settlers.
