AdZU Community Commemorate EDSA@39 with Peace Walk, Affirm Commitment to Democracy

Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) students, faculty, and staff took part in a meaningful commemoration of the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on February 25th, engaging in a “Peace Walk” through the university’s Nunez Street murals. This culminating event, organized by the Social Development Office and the Formation Unit, aimed to connect the historical significance of EDSA with contemporary calls for peace, solidarity, and social responsibility.

Despite classes being held, unlike other institutions, students taking the Freshmen Formation Program (FFP) gathered at MPCC 1 to begin the commemoration. Organizers expressed that this was done to show that as Ateneans, their commitment extends beyond academics and that they are called to live their values.

The Peace Walk, a symbolic journey through the vibrant murals depicting themes of peace and community, provided students with an opportunity for reflection and dialogue. Facilitators guided participants in pondering crucial questions: What changes do they wish to see in their schools, communities, and the nation? What role does their generation play in upholding the spirit of EDSA? And how can they apply the lessons of People Power in their daily lives?

As they walked, students were encouraged to observe the peace symbols within the murals and consider their connection to the values and actions of the EDSA Revolution. The activity emphasized that the pursuit of democracy and peace is an ongoing process, demanding active participation and commitment from every citizen.

Upon returning to the venue, students participated in a solemn pledge of commitment, reaffirming their dedication to safeguarding democracy, upholding human rights, and fostering good governance. The pledge, rooted in Ateneo’s values of “Men and Women for and with others,” resonated deeply with the participants, who vowed to be agents of change in their communities and the nation.

“This Peace Walk was more than just a commemorative event,” stated Ms Mary Elizabeth S Apolonio, the Program Officer for Peace and Development of the Social Development Office. She adds, “It was a reminder that the spirit of EDSA lives on and that we, as young Filipinos, have a responsibility to carry its torch forward.”

The AdZU EDSA Peace Walk served as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the People Power Revolution, inspiring students to embrace their role in peacebuilding and nation-building in Zamboanga and beyond.
