A Day of Giving
by Gianina Somblingo
The Information Technology Society (ITS) launched the Computer Literacy Outreach Program in the Antonio Go Computer Laboratory in WHKSJ Campus in Tumaga, last Saturday, September 10, 2011. This is one of the interactive clubs in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School that aims to teach elementary and Special Education students from other schools about the different aspects of learning Information Technology. It also gives the Ateneo High School students the opportunity to share the knowledge that they have in the field of IT Education, and this outreach serves as their first step, this year, in successfully achieving their objectives before this school year ends.
Truly, this club’s objectives were fulfilled in their first outreach program. The first pupils of the IT Society were elementary students of Tumaga Elementary School and the Special Education students from ZCHS Main. Everyone was eager to know more about the basics in using the computer; its parts, functions and the procedure on how a computer is used. An IT member was paired with a student whom he/she will be teaching for that morning. A certain bond was right away made between the IT member, acting as the teacher, and his or her student for that day.
Once again, the Ateneo proved that they do live by the values and teachings that they teach to their students—the value of Generosity. Generosity, a value of giving and sharing what one have and what one knows to others without asking for any cost or payment in exchange of their good deed. Ateneans, as most people say, are fortunate students who are given the opportunity to go to a prestigious school, learn advance subjects and have the good facilities that not all schools in the city have.
In this outreach program, Ateneans truly showed how they are open to share what they know and share the facilities that they have to other students who are eager to learn and who look forward to meeting people who could teach them about a lot of things. No wonder District I Congresswoman Maria Isabel “Beng” Climaco-Salazar strongly supports such program that the Ateneo does. The congresswoman visited the Ateneo Campus during the outreach and gave a short message to everyone—believing that outreaches or any programs such as this show the act genuine kindness that every single person should show to others in order to create an atmosphere of generosity and citizenship in a community.
This outreach of the IT Society showed how Ateneans value generosity and how they go by on this year’s theme — Citizenship. This was surely a successful event and the next sessions of outreach will certainly be as productive and helpful to a lot of students as how the computer literacy outreach had been.
The outreach will be held at the Antonio Go Computer Laboratory on the following Saturdays: (8AM to 11:30AM)
