ADZU Grade Schooler makes waves in Kota Kinabalu SwimFest

A 12-year old swimmer from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University Grade School won nine (9) gold, four (4) silver, one bronze medals and a trophy for being adjudged as the MOST BEMEDALLED SWIMMER in the 43rd MALAYSIA AGE GROUP SWIMMING COMPETITION held last February 5-7, 2010 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.

Mary Angelic M. Saavedra, coached by two-time Olympian Leroy Goff, won the gold in the 200m individual medley, 200m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 4x100m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

She also won the silver medal in the 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 4x100m medley and 400m individual medley and the bronze in the 100m freestyle.

According to Susan Papa, team coordinator and Secretary General of the Aquatic Sports Association of the Philippines (ASAP), Ms. Saavedra is a very promising swimmer and could break the national swimming records if properly handled. “Her clockings were the best I can recall from her age group in the Philippines”, Papa added.
